On the importance of a Name

Some person hold that name is important and the effect of a name should not be underestimated. Social science research, they say, has found that the names people are given at birth carry substantial psychological weight -- people learn to define themselves by the names they are given. For instance, one may find that a young girl endowed with a birth name that is considered to be particularly feminine may apperar to develop a personality based on her sense of femininity.

Others, however, hold the opposite view. According to them, names are nothing more than arbitrary symbols. In this sence, there is no necessary connection between one's name and his personality. For example, a man named Bruiser ( a bruiser is a strong man or someone who argues with a lot of force, making others feel rather afraid) may turn out to be a short man that is mild, silent and patient.

In my opinion, some names do have a psychological impact that can be somewhat generalized. But individual mindset, culture and one's environment will influence this in various ways, sometimes giving it a completely different direction as could have expected.

There is no doubt that mental health is of great imprtance to college students. Nowadays, many students in college suffer from mental illness, which severely affects both their study and life.
In view of the situation, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. Due attention has to be paid by colleges to students' mental health. First, lectures on psychological health should be frequently given to students to prevent problems from happening. Secondly, psychological clinics should be set up to provide troubled students with timely help.

As to students, we should keep the channel of communication open among ourselves and between us and our teachers and parents.
